One more thought:

It is amazing that how our self-inflating ego can sometimes inflate even otherwise objective facts in such a massive scale!!

This is something that I believe we all should be consciously and constantly watching out for.

Wow, thanks for posting this!!

I am always aware of the fact that mercator map projection inflats the sizes of places away from the equator, but never border to find out how much the inflation is. This really blows my mind off!!

No planar map can preserve both the size and the shape. The following two pictures shows how things are distorted even if they want to preserve the size. (Sinusoidal projection preserves the size http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_indicatrix_world_map_sinusoidal_proj.svg , Peters projection: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_indicatrix_world_map_Gall-Peters_equal-area_proj.svg ) Both distorted the shapes.

In fact, the best way to get a sense of the size is to use google earth (thanks to technology). Using google earth and rotating the earth using the same scale, you really have a TRUE sense of the sizes and shapes of various places and easily verify (even just by eyeballing) the fact that USA, China, India, and all of Europe can all be fit within Africa!!

This really changes the importance and the significance of places like Africa in my mind!!

Thanks of posting!!
